I know, I know it's been a while! (Movie review: Mysterious Skin)

Ok so I know I've been gone for a while...:( I'm sorry! Please forgive!

But I have a pwesent for you...a new REVIEW! *flash applause sound*

Onward:

Movie: Mysterious Skin

Grade: A-

Reason: I...well... What can I say about this film? It was a raw take on molestation, teenage male prostitution, assumed Alien abduction, Teen drug abuse, and the outcomes of all three ideas rolled into one unanimous, horrible truth. My heart went out to both main characters played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Neil, and Brady Corbet as Brian. Levitt, does an awesome job at putting himself into this role completely. For a few seconds, I had to remind myself that this wasn't his life, as a bio-pic, but a character he was playing. For Corbet, I thought that his portayal as the nerdy-ish small town boy was dead on, though not a hard part to play, he did add alot more depth than one would expect for his particular character. Other good supporting roles were Michelle Trachtenberg as Wendy, Neils partner in crime and "Soulmate"; and Jeffrey Licon as Eric, Neil and Wendy's gothicly flambouyant gay friend who has a small thing for Neil.

This movie deals with so much in such a short period of time. It's shocking, it's moving, and ultimately it's haunting. It will definitely leave you with "Well if this hadn't happened...I wonder..." thoughts jumping around in your head. I saw this movie a week ago and it is still fresh in my mind.
The only reason there is a minus after the "A", is simply because of the topics the movie involves, and the fact that I didn't feel as if there was an adequate enough warning of the heaviness of the topics (:P but that's just me). Also, just like in "Role Models", repetitive use of profanity from a child still irks me.

If you are someone who personally identifies with this movie as I am, I must tell you, have some one with you. It will bring out the strongest of emotions.

Get on the Short bus baby....

Hello my dears!
I truly apologize, I had forgotten to add "Happy Thanksgiving" in my last post, totally uncool of me, and I hope I am forgiven!

Whilst somewhat tipsy on friday night, we stumbled down the stairs, my fiance and I (very dangerous I know) and got our netflix. Suprise suprise it was "Short bus", an erotic psycho- analitical look into well...sex!

Plot: The story revolves around a "Sex shrink" named Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), her inability to attain an orgasm (though I would say she fakes it with her hubby quite well...I was fooled at least :P); This adorable gay couple Jamie (PJ DeBoy) & James (Paul Dawson), and the lack of intimacy issues they have with James being a very depressed young man; and Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a dominatrix who can't keep a relationship going. There's a host of other interesting, weird, and incredible intriguing people who all attend a sex club on a regulr basis and hang out.

Grade: B+

Reason: I thought the movie had a very interesting twist. It truly plays on that idea of a Psychologist going to see a Psychologist, or at least needing to. I mean here's Sophia, where her job entails her to lead people to their own orgasmic path, she cannot achieve one. I loved the fact that she let you know, it was her doing, putting the blame on no one but herself, saying in one segment "You have to achieve your own orgasm". So ladies.. I'm sorry to say this.. while I do believe it is up to both people to get there, don't go blaming your dude because HE didn't deliver...you've got to get down there and do the deed and help out too!

The opening seen, where you first meet James..he's in a bath tub doing the most strangest of things... peeing....in the bath tub. While that grossed me the hell out, it also left me wanting to know what in the world his deal was?! You sort of get piece by piece with him when you watch him try out auto-fellacio. Did I mention he was doing this on camera? throughout the movie, you find out he has never actually been entered, or at least not many many times, and that his intimacy issues run deep coinciding with his depressional behavior. All the while, if you have a small feeling like someones always watching you...that certainly doesn't help.

As for the last co-character Severin...it may have been the alcohal, but I honestly just wanted to smack her around abit, knock some sense into her, but of course, her being a Dominatrix, she would take it as foreplay. The fact that the longest relationship she's had is with a "trustfund baby" (as she puts it) who happens to be a John of hers, is...well... completely her fault. It isn't that she isn't lovable, its that she has some melodramatic issues that she just doesn't seem to want to get past. She's young, and along with being young comes that "I know what I'm doing, I don't need your help" attitude ( I know, I have that attitude :P), but in trying to proove to people that you don't need their help, you get yourself into a situation where you need their help very..very badly, and of course, you cannot call yourself out.

While I loved the movies many subjects, the art and imagery of it. I did feel as if the sex scenes where redundant. And you KNOW that has to be a bad thing when I say they're redundant, cause I seriously do not mind sex scenes AT ALL the more, the merrier, except for this movie... But looking back at it, I can see why there were so many, if you take out the raw animalistic act of it, you see the stories unfold in each engagement. The actors, for what the movie was and was about, I think did a great job portraying each characters issue. I can honestly say I would watch the movie again.
(Side note: I thought it was my loverly drunk-ed-ness, that was the reason why I found this movie adoring, and strange, and also why I fell in love with the soundtrack. No, no no that wasn't it. It was written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, who also wrote ( I believe) and directed "Hedwig and the Angry Inch". Loved loved loved that movie. He wa also in "Girl 6" by Spike Lee which is another favorite movie of mine...so..yeah.wooot!).
Soooo definitely give this movie a watch, if you have the time...*giggle* I made a funny :P.

Movies..

So,

I find that in trying to write about myself.. I can't exactly put that into words effectively enough that, it a) will make sense to somebody but myself, and b) I won't come off sounding like a blithering idiot.

So.. I got to thinking, what do I like, what can I write about (as I have to write something, for my creative outlet right now, I'm seriously lacking in that arena)? Well.... just like any American *snorts of laughter* kid in their 20's, I love movies.. I like 'em twisted, slapstick, romcom, ingenius, spoof, ignorant. I like 'em all. I mean my Netflix queue, is stupid long, because I cannot go on that website without somehow managing to add 20 new movies that I "Absolutely have to see". So it's somewhere around...350 now? Wow..

So in trying to review the movies I've seen.. I'll prolly end up correlating them to life, some how.. blah blah :P.

I would do music, and all things cultural and what not, but... being a musical person, to the core.. I can't effectively put into words the emotions, some songs make me feel..because I'm not yet there in my life to be able to name the emotion I have for something, that strikes me that deep. Corny, I know.. but think about, music has been around since the dawning of time, for a reason.

HOWEVER, there maybe certain times, where I've listened to a CD, that I have fallen in love with, and I'll go ahead and write alittle about it...but I will ultimately leave the decision up to you, as to whether you'll like it to. I don't about you, but I personally HATE being told what I do, should, and should not hate or dislike.

HAVING SAID ALL OF THAT (damn, I talk a lot :P).

I'll start off with the first movie:

The Invisible

Plot: Kid gets brutely beat up by bully, left for dead, only to "Wake up" and find he's in limbo and only has an alotted time to find his body , solve his own murder in time to save his life.

Grade: D +

Reason:

The subject matter, could have been very interesting, in the fact that I haven't heard of the plot turning this way. The closest movie I can think to compare it to, would be "Ghost", and I think that is possibly why it didn't do so well at the box office.

The acting, wasn't atrocious but it definitely wasn't good either. The actor playing Nick (
Justin Chatwin), who is the main character, unfortunately, I felt like he needed to center his acting skills alittle more, in order to play this part with a more convincing manner. The actress who played Annie (Margarita Levieva), she did well in her role; But I honestly have to say, Anger, isn't a hard emotion to play. It just isn't, it's unfortunately one of the most natural emotions in human nature.

The same thing goes for
Marcia Gay Harden who played the mother in this movie. I don't think I've seen her in a role not like this one. I think she's type cast in such a way where it's SO normal for her, you don't realize she is literally playing the same character over and over! Which in and of itself is.. alittle sad I must say.

The rest of the cast, including the whimpy, idiotic, asshole "sell up the river" best friend, played by Christopher Marquette, was not noteworthy. Which for a movie is definitely not a good thing. If you only notice the main characters, and not the supporting roles, AT ALL, that's bad. it means on the actor/actresses part, they weren't really in the role. They didn't take the precaution to study it, because they themselves felt the role wasn't important enough. For the director, they needed to direct....effectively, so that, while you're not overwhelmed by supporting roles, you also remember who they were!

I'm not going to tell you not to watch the movie, everyone is different. I'm not gonna lie, I liked Glitter :P, for the girlie crap that it was. Mariah Carey isn't an actress... duely noted before she even attempted to do a movie. The critics HATED her. You may actually like The Invisible, which is why I'm saying, you should watch it...at least once, and figure it out for your self...

Last Words: I probably won't watch it again, it's one of those, once you've seen it, you've seen it sort of deals. It wasn't an "F" (close though eh), but I woulda been PISSED if I'd actually paid to see it :/.

Yo yo you homie yo
